| The journey starts in "railway weather" - otherwise known as rain (some like to call it "liquid sunshine" !) - at North Somerset Junction, east of Bristol Temple Meads station, (seen here with a different train). Our dmu special forks right, onto the normally freight-only branch, about three years after passenger services ceased in 1959. Part of the route lies in the rain shadow from the Mendips, so precipitation - today due to a frontal system - is no great surprise at all. |  |

| After heading up through Brislington station,
next door to "Bristol" buses - the company that, amazingly, led to Concorde,
we continue at sub-sonic speed. Hilly terrain may have slowed trains to
Radstock and Frome, but even today by road it's still not a fast journey.
In those hills are coal, in a more convoluted continuation of the Welsh
seams, ( making them harder to work ).
