Leaving Bath Green Park, you can just perceive steam rising from the Ivatt tank, no. 82044, which has trundled the train over the "Midland" route from Bristol.

The hilly nature of the Northern half of the line is quickly revealed, with the  climb through the district of Twerton, into Devonshire Tunnel.
